  പണ്ട്, സിൽബാരിപുരം ദേശത്ത് ഭൂരിഭാഗം വീടുകളിലും പട്ടിണി അനുഭവപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. പണികൾക്ക് കുറഞ്ഞ കൂലി മാത്രമായിരുന്നു കിട്ടിയിരുന്നത്. മാത്രമല്ല, പ്രധാന കൃഷിയിടങ്ങളെല്ലാം രാജകൊട്ടാരത്തിൻ്റെ അധികാരത്തിലാണ്. മറ്റുള്ളവ ഏതാനും ജന്മിമാരുടെ സ്വന്തമായിരുന്നു. കൂലിവേലകൾ ചെയ്തിരുന്ന രാമുവിന് ദാരിദ്ര്യമായിരുന്നു എപ്പോഴും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത്. നാലു കുട്ടികളും ഭാര്യയും അടങ്ങുന്ന കുടുംബമായിരുന്നു അത്. ഊണു കഴിക്കുമ്പോൾ മീനും ഇറച്ചിയും ഒന്നും ഉണ്ടാകാറില്ല. മുളകു പൊട്ടിച്ചതും ചമ്മന്തിയുമൊക്കെയാവും സ്ഥിരമായ കറികൾ. മീൻ കച്ചവടക്കാരനായ അയൽവാസി ചീരൻ്റെ പറമ്പിൽ മിക്കവാറും ദിവസങ്ങളിൽ രാമുവിന് പണികൾ കിട്ടാറുണ്ട്. ഒരിക്കൽ ചീരൻ, രാമുവിനോടു പറഞ്ഞു -"ഞാൻ ഒരാഴ്ച ഇവിടെയുണ്ടാകില്ല. എൻ്റെ പണിക്കാരനാകും മീൻകട നോക്കുക. വിറ്റുപോകാതെ മിച്ചം വരുന്ന മീനുകൾ നിനക്കു വീട്ടിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുപോകാം" മുതലാളിയുടെ വാക്കുകൾ അനുസരിക്കുന്ന ശീലമായിരുന്നു രാമുവിൻ്റേത്. ഈ കാര്യം ഭാര്യയോടും കുട്ടികളോടും പറഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ അവർക്ക് ഏറെ സന്തോഷമായി. ഭാര്യ പറഞ്ഞു -"മീൻകറി കഴിച്ച കാലം മറന്നു!" പക്ഷേ, രാമു ഒന്നും മിണ്ടിയില്ല.  ചീരൻ പറഞ്ഞതു പോലെ ...
