Why Meditate?
The definition of Yoga as "Yogas Chitta Vritti Nirodha" (the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind) often confuses people. When we say that Yoga is about stopping the "vrittis" of the mind, it doesn't mean you have to eliminate all thoughts.
Rather, it means getting rid of irregular, unnatural, or harmful thoughts. Meditation and pranayama are excellent for this. Even in yogasanas, ancient sages would perform poses like Vrikshasana (tree pose) to keep their minds from wandering. By focusing on balancing, distracting negative thoughts would disappear.
Chanting mantras and prayers can also be used to remove these negative thoughts.
Though it may sound like ancient mythology, in a time without technology or equipment, sages and yogis left us with a wealth of knowledge. When foreigners scientifically prove these very same things, they become "super science"!
First, you shouldn't wait to practice meditation until your mind is in complete chaos, because at that point, it won't cooperate.
Therefore, you should have a meditation practice in your "stock" that suits you best when you are in a comfortable state.
Second, for meditation to be effective, you must prepare yourself. In other words, you can't continuously engage in sins and bad deeds on one side and expect meditation to work on the other. This is because your subconscious mind is already reacting to the bad things.
While there are many types of mantra meditation, repeating the same word helps the mind push away other thoughts. However, for some, this can feel like a form of suffocation, causing them to open their eyes and stop abruptly.
To experience pranayama like meditation, Alternate Nostril Pranayama (Nadi Shodhana) is very effective. However, people with a low heart rate or low blood pressure should not do it.
The best natural meditation is sleep!
7 hours and 15 minutes of sleep is considered excellent.
The long-term experience of happiness is bliss. Experiencing bliss is very much like meditation.
A person who gets good sleep doesn't need to practice meditation to fix their mind. Sleep is a complex process. During this time, the mind and body are purified and regulated. Many hormones, neurotransmitters, enzymes, and catalysts are regulated and produced, which helps to maintain a good mood for the next day.
If issues such as having bad dreams, not being able to fall asleep within ten minutes, talking in your sleep, grinding your teeth, having strange facial expressions, twitching, or waking up in the middle of the night are disturbing your sleep, meditation can help to regulate these to some extent.
Sleep is crucial for mental health. If any bad habits, inferiority complexes, guilt, revenge, jealousy, or arrogance are disturbing your sleep, you should identify the cause and, if possible, eliminate it.
Why meditate?
Most people use meditation to cope with adverse mental conditions. It can help overcome small problems. In this case, its effectiveness may vary depending on the person, situation, and the problem.
Another group of people meditates for knowledge, to improve their lives, to know themselves, to achieve goals, for research, out of curiosity, or as a hobby.
A third group—sadhus, hermits, and sages—live a yogic life and use serious meditation to achieve Samadhi (a state of meditative consciousness).
