Hoja's charity!
Hojamulla's acts of charity also had certain peculiarities. In the eyes of ordinary people, he sometimes wouldn't give to those who seemed deserving. Conversely, he might give money to those whom common people deemed undeserving!
One day, a stranger approached Hojamulla and requested, "Please show me some mercy. It would be a great help if you could lend me 10 silver coins."
Immediately, Hojamulla asked, "Do you drink alcohol?"
"Yes," the man admitted.
Hojamulla asked again, "Do you smoke?"
"Mmm, yes."
"Are you extravagant or wasteful?" (Do you spend lavishly?)
"I have that habit too."
"Do you gamble?"
"I do that too, Master," the man replied.
At that, Hojamulla gave him 10 coins and sent him off!
A man who had witnessed all this was standing nearby. He approached Hojamulla and also asked for a loan of 10 coins.
Hojamulla repeated the exact same questions he had asked the first man.
However, the answers he received were completely the opposite. Upon hearing them, Hojamulla said, "I will not give you even a single coin."
Immediately, the second man became resentful. "The person who left just a while ago had so many bad habits, yet you gave him 10 coins. But I, who have no bad habits, received nothing!"
Hojamulla explained, "The first person has many bad habits, so he has a lot of expenses. But you, who live a simple life without any bad habits or expenses, do not need the money!"
The man stared, wide-eyed, upon hearing that!
