Hoja and chieftain!
The local chieftain of the area where Mulla (Nasreddin) Hodja lived and Hodja himself shared a good friendship. The chieftain greatly enjoyed Hodja's actions and his sense of humour.
One day, the topic of Heaven and Hell came up in their conversation. At that point, the chieftain asked Hodja, "O, my friend, can you show me a way to reach Heaven?"
Immediately, Hodja replied, "If you sleep all the time, you can reach Heaven."
The chieftain was astonished to hear this. "What nonsense are you talking, man?"
Hodja continued, "My Lord, you can reach Heaven only by staying away from evil deeds all day long. In your case, the easiest way to do that is to sleep without ever coming out of your room."
The chieftain finally grasped the essence of what Hodja was saying. This was because the chieftain spent his entire day forcing labourers to work like slaves without giving them their due wages, and he would also lend money to the villagers at exorbitant interest rates. Such practices counted as evil deeds!
