A Dog's Master!
No one really knows exactly when dogs became man’s best friend. However, I have had the chance to read many interesting stories regarding this.
Here is one such story.
Many centuries ago, in a place called Silbaripuram, the town and the forest were closely intertwined. In those days, wolves used to live together in packs of fifty or a hundred. But they stayed deep inside the forest.
On the other hand, there were many dogs that used to roam near the forest edges in search of food. But they were not friendly with humans at that time.
Once, one of these dogs wandered into the forest. He met a fox and they became friends. But when they lay down to sleep at night, the dog saw the bright moon and started barking.
The fox said, "You have ruined my sleep too. Get out of here!"
Moving on, the dog met a goat. They became companions. The next day, at midnight, the goat expressed his displeasure upon hearing the dog's barking.
As he moved to another area, he befriended a cow. There too, the cow complained about his barking during the night.
In this way, no animal wanted to stay with the dog because of his habit of barking while others were trying to sleep. Finally, he realized that only the "cruel" humans were left for him to approach.
He returned to the village at night. There, a man was guarding his fish pond. He had to be alert because even a moment’s carelessness would allow thieves to steal the fish.
That night, because the moonlight was so bright, the dog kept barking loudly at the moon. Noticing this, the farmer muttered to himself, "Hearing this dog's continuous barking, no thief would dare to come here."
Immediately, he threw a large fish to the dog. After eating it greedily, the dog went near the farmer and wagged his tail to show his affection.
From that day on, the dog started staying awake at night to guard the fish pond, continuing his nightly barking.
The farmer whispered happily, "Now I can sleep peacefully at night!"
At the same time, the dog also thought to himself, "Only this human is happy to hear my barking at night!"
Moral: Dogs are far ahead of humans when it comes to love and friendship. They will protect their master even at the cost of their life!
